Derezzed

A science fiction term: to disappear or dissolve into pixels.

Derezzed, created in 2020, is a visual exploration of the intersection between reality and the virtual world. The images combine realistic environments with low-resolution visual elements.

This project invites you to look into a world that almost looks real, but not quite. There is an interesting tension and sense of uncertainty when examining the photographs, as if stepping into the brink of another dimension that hasn’t fully materialized. The surreal quality of the photographs begs the question of what lies beyond worlds created with pixel data.

These images are all that is left from worlds that have been erased, as they no longer exist in virtual reality form. The platform on which I made this work, called Altspace was dissolved in 2023.
